These two fruits – as is, with no
added sugar or in pies – have been shown to significantly reduce your risk for
having a heart attack.
Why? Due to the powerful
anthocyanins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are present in these
tiny, but powerful berries.
One study that followed up over
93,000 women for 18 years looked to see if certain dietary foods could cut the
risk for heart attacks in these women.
In over 18 years of follow up, there
were 405 heart attacks documented.
They showed that people who ate more
anthocyanin-rich foods, had a lower risk for having a heart attack compared to
those with a lower intake.
Plus, the combination of
strawberries and blueberries – both foods rich in anthocyanins – eaten THREE
times per week or more, were associated with a lower risk for having a heart
attack.
This was compared to people who were
getting less than THREE servings per week.
They did note that other flavonoids
were not significantly associated with a lower risk.
They concluded: “A high intake of anthocyanins may reduce MI
risk in predominantly young women. Intervention trials are needed to further
examine the health impact of increasing intakes of commonly consumed
anthocyanin-rich foods.”
