Turns
out, the produce with the biggest beauty benefits contains specific plant
compounds called carotenoids. More specifically: beta-carotene, found in
carrots, yams, peaches, pumpkin, apricots and spinach; and lycopene, which adds
a reddish hue to peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, apricots and pink grapefruits.
And
it doesn’t even take weeks to see the results in the mirror. A previous study
revealed that when you add fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene and
lycopene to your daily plate, you can increase the level of carotenoids in your
skin in as little as three days.
But
a word of caution, common stressors —fatigue, smoking, alcohol consumption and
illness —can just as easily drain your skin of these protective (and
beautifying) antioxidants, in some cases in as little as 24 hours.
